Cisco Visual Networking Index Predicts Near-Tripling of IP Traffic by 2020 - & north Ireland's Un-internet

In a recent article Cisco predict:-

"Growth Driven by More Than One Billion New Internet Users and 10 Billion New Devices and Connections Over the Next Five Years"

What Does this Look Like in Traffic Terms?

Global IP Traffic Growth, 2015–2020
Table 1 shows the top-line forecast. According to this forecast, global IP traffic in 2015 stands at 72.5 EB per month and will nearly triple by 2020, to reach 194.4 EB per month. Consumer IP traffic will reach 162.2 EB per month and business IP traffic will surpass 32.2 EB per month by 2020.

White paper: Cisco VNI Forecast and Methodology, 2015-2020

What's an Exabyte?

1 EB = 10006bytes = 1018bytes = 1000000000000000000B = 1000 petabytes = 1 million terabytes = 1 billion gigabytes. It is interesting to note that this is Per Month

Wikipedia say; "the world's technological capacity to store information grew from 2.6 ("optimally compressed") exabytes in 1986 to 15.8 in 1993, over 54.5 in 2000, and to 295 (optimally compressed) exabytes in 2007."

So we see a progression from our technological capacity of 2.6 in 1986 to a predicted volume of 194.4 per month, yes per month!

The Downside

There is a downside for anyone in the north of Ireland - Government cannot get their head around it... :-(

  • although Motorola made the first mobile call in 1973 we still do not have decent mobile service
  • the only thing fast about the broadband is the writing on the side of telecom vans,
  • we are stuck in pseudo speed enhancement services like microwave / satellite
  • satellite - each transmission takes about a 45,000 mile trip between you, the satellite, and the Internet Service Provider.
  • Latency - 230 milliseconds or more, this may not be much but multiply it by 10 sentences or live video and you have a problem. For example if you Ping this site it resolves in circa 28ms (thanks Google)
  • Fair Access Policy or FAP aka Throttling - you are sharing this connection with everyone in the footprint of the satellite, internet connectivity via satellite is like a torch - not really much good around the edges - i.e. charge everyone the same - give everyone the same mediocre service so no-one can complain.

Anything apart from hardwired / fibre to the home is snake oil although there are a number of exciting projects running enhanced Wifi,

There is a case to be made for a Communications Convention. I'm sure Cisco, Google Fibre & FTTH and other network providers / specialists would send representatives. We could all have a deep meaningful constructive discussion and workshops with definitive outputs leading to a better way - .i.e. objectives that are timebound quantifiable and measurable- is this is such a wild dream?

The Future?

“Digitization will be key to how countries maintain global competitiveness, increase GDP growth, foster innovation and create new jobs.”

- John Chambers
https://newsroom.cisco.com/country-digitization?

Unless there is a major policy change, engagement with industry and a genuine recognition of an urgent problem needing a dramatic solution it is time to book a ticket to another country folks.

It will be most disappointing if the Unwilling appointed by the Unable to do the Unnecessary for the Ungrateful are in the ascendancy :-(

Quo Vadis?

It would be most constructive and useful to bring all the players together via a Communications Convention in Belfast. Given the fact that it is now 43 years from the first mobile telephone call and we are no closer to a universal mobile service one is reminded of what Albert Einstein said;-

"the problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them"

The Rise of the Machine

The most recent McKinsey Quarterly focuses on the replacement of people by machines / robots.

Somewhat typically the media treats the notion of robots performing boring, poorly paid repetitive jobs as bad for society.

Face up to The Future - Humans Need not Apply.

This process began a long time ago, as articulated by Nikolai Kondratiev* and his theory of cycles or waves. In the 1990's we saw dramatic increases in connectivity and global cross fertilisation delivered by the emergence of the internet. The next decade saw the banking collapse and the inequities of society in plain sight. The concept of the war sub-contractor operating as a 'business'.

This decade is all about dissatisfaction, a growing body of knowledge and awareness of Government ineptitude, inefficiency, a lack of accountability, increasing violence towards the citizen., and inexplicably a seemingly complete lack of grasp of comptech. Of course there are some exceptions in some Governments - nonetheless citizens are beginning to push back; in some cases via direct confrontation but in many others just by doing.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
R. Buckminster Fuller

A Gutenberg Replay?

One factor in the mass adoption of the Gutenberg press was the reaction of town councils, they allowed the press to reside temporarily before moving 'the problem' elsewhere.

Elizabeth Eisenstein in her seminal work "The Printing Press as an Agent of Change" said:-

"The Printing Revolution occurred when the spread of the printing press facilitated the wide circulation of information and ideas, acting as an "agent of change" through the societies that it reached." (Eisenstein (1980)

We are now living in the age the technocrat, no doubt this will prove to be a critical development / driver in this context. Digital nomads, as agents of change, spreading tech religion, 'heresy' promulgated at the speed of light.

Examples of novel thinking recently realised are:-
  • Uber - a company with the most trips but no taxis
  • AirBNB - a company with the most stays but no rooms
  • Cryptocurrency - units of money outside the control of government
  • Cloud computing - distributed high end computing at a fractional cost
  • The rise of Open Source (everything?)
All of this aided and abetted by the global democratisation of capital.

  • Kickstarter
  • Indiegogo
  • Social impact bonds
  • Peer-to-peer lending
  • Micro finance
  • Pop up crypto funding via Monero, Ethereum, Bitcoin - you are your bank!

The combination of fractionalisation of computing power, the decoupling of money from State control and the sharing economy represent a remarkable convergence.

We now have those who do not really want to or need to own it - just use it

- a hybrid anarchist / capitalist / socialist.

Ultimately this will lead to the decline of the brand, of mass consumerism, of the nation state as we know it today- The Robot Future Cometh

McKinsey Point to Manufacturing, food service & retailing

"Almost one-fifth of the time spent in US workplaces involves performing physical activities or operating machinery in a predictable environment: workers carry out specific actions in well-known settings where changes are relatively easy to anticipate. Through the adaptation and adoption of currently available technologies, we estimate the technical feasibility of automating such activities at 78 percent."

"A service sector occupies the top spot: accommodations and food service, where almost half of all labor time involves predictable physical activities and the operation of machinery—including preparing, cooking, or serving food; cleaning food-preparation areas; preparing hot and cold beverages; and collecting dirty dishes. According to our analysis, 73 percent of the activities workers perform in food service and accommodations have the potential for automation, based on technical considerations."

You May be Sceptical.. but

Domino's is bringing robotic pizza delivery to New Zealand. The pizza chain today announced that it will trial a battery-powered delivery robot in the capital city of Wellington

*
Whilst academic economists cannot agree on long wave theory (and this is not surprising since they cannot agree how to operate economies) and in this context it is useful to quote George Bernard Shaw:-

"If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion."

It is evident that we progress through different 'ages':-
  • the agrarian revolution
  • the industrial revolution
  • the computer revolution
  • the information / internet revolution
  • the smart phone revolution

The computer / internet / mobile developments are revolutionary and are changing every facet of business and how we communicate locally and globally. This revolution is only beginning.

The Rise of the DAO

The ÐΑΩ is Live!!! - The official address is: - 0xBB9bc244D798123fDe783fCc1C72d3Bb8C189413

We stand here at the birth of the DAO - for all of us participating; the creators, the coders, the contributors, the curators, the thousands on the Slack channel and on the DAOHub, all the participants on Github, Stackexchange, Reddit, hundreds of bloggers and commentators - the long hours of building and testing are at an end.

  • like the first email in the 1960's
  • like the first mobile call in the 1970's
  • like the Tim Berners-Lee paper in the 1980's
  • like the release of WWW software by CERN in the 1990's
The birth of The DAO is a key event that will be followed by an array of amazing developments. The pace of change will be dramatic and driven by the imagination of literally millions of people. This will upset the status quo in ways we are only beginning to imagine.

Looking back how could one have ever predicted; Wikipedia, Linux, the beginning of online purchases, of online auctions, of search engines and bookstores, streaming video, machine translation, Wifi, the list goes on and on.

In this decade a wave on ongoing development (just when we thought there were no more really big ideas); Uber, AirBnB, crowd funding and most importantly, the beginning of the democratisation of capital via the blockchain, the distributed ledger and Ethereum.

  • Like everything the human race produces there is good and bad and an ongoing technological struggle against the scammers and spammers and trolls / the evil and the greedy. The naysayers pointing only to the negative aspects and the legacy media hyena feeding on misery - many outlets simply producing disinformation / soft propaganda for their governments or distorting truth at the behest of vested interests.
  • Citizens pushing back with messaging in repressive regimes, the hard reality of "democracy" as revealed by Wikileaks, the Sopa/Pipa blackouts - this next wave driven by the march of the smartphone - finally at long last a method for the citizen to engage with their fellow citizens unencumbered by government.
  • We are already seeing the emergence of sensors and connected devices; for pollution control, personal safety, for medical use, for remote communities, mobile payments, the sending of micro payments in under-developed regions, in response to natural disaster; the growth of community - of people doing it for themselves. Small agricultural producers reaching out directly to large consumer markets.
  • The sharing economy is in its infancy, (but perhaps) with an unsustainable level of commissions in the hands of the first movers. It will ultimately deliver unprecedented change in how business and community and government are constructed and funded.
There can be no doubt that the technological advances brought about by the internet create freedom vectors, from the ability to simply express oneself to whistle blowing, to the reduction of protectionism and artificial duties and the breaking down of trade barriers - all edifices existing at the expense of the citizen.

At long last the markets and structures and controls put in place by the old empires marauding across the globe are coming to an end. This change will not happen tomorrow or next year but like all things technological the early adopters are working tirelessly towards this goal, often without pay or without tangible reward. Most importantly the early majority are waiting in the wings.

Welcome to the next (r)evolutionary step - the Rise of the DAO

A DAO Split

The question of a DAO split will no doubt be a recurring theme as priorities change and DAOs evolve. This article is written in the context / operational confines of the DAO as gifted to the global community by Slock.it* as the code exists as of today's date - 14.Apr.2016.
--
The term 'Split' could simply be a single individual extracting their own investment.. aka 'LeaveDAO', 'ExitDAO', of course it could also be a group of investors opposed to a proposal but nonetheless in simple terms it is a mechanism to extract ones own investment...
  • there is no quorum requirement, so that every token holder has the ability to split into their own DAO.
  • the new DAO has the same code as the original DAO
  • the framework allows both public sale and private sale
As per the White Paper 6.3 the split data structure is used to split the DAO. It contains:
  • splitBalance: The balance of the current DAO minus the proposal deposit at the time of split.
  • totalSupply: The total amount of DAO tokens in existence at the time of the split.
  • rewardToken: The amount of reward tokens owned by the original DAO at the time of split.
  • newDAO: The address of the new DAO contract(0 if not created yet).
These are pretty vanilla and just do what is being ask = 'Split'
Scenario A
you are absent, ill, on holiday, without connectivity, upon return you see a proposal has passed, you do not like it for whatever reason. This could be to do with a new Contractor, a new Curator, the product direction, the cost, the people - whatever factor in the proposal or change in the landscape that concerns you - so you just Split (leave the scene) aka 'ExitDAO', LeaveDAO'
In this Scenario A if you 'Split' aka 'Leave' you are still entitled to receive rewards.

As per section 4. Majority robs minority attack - in the White Paper;-
"..a single token holder is able to both retrieve their remaining portion of ether and maintain their right to any future rewards associated to their previous contribution, as these will be sent to the new DAO automatically. Rewards are defined as any ether received by the DAO generated from products the DAO funded so far.."

As per section 7. Reward Tokens - in the White Paper;-
"..the DAO will send the accumulated rewards to the rewardAccount which is held in the ManagedAccount contract. Then and only then will the token holders of the DAOs that hold reward tokens be able to call the getMyReward function and receive their ether.."

"..this process guarantees that any DAO token holder whose ether was spent building a product will receive the rewards promised to them from that product even if they decide to split from the DAO.."

Points to Note:

Proposals voted on after the split will only pay out rewards to their respective DAO.
a DAO is a living business, failure to monitor proposals could have an adverse impact

Scenario B

Alternatively you could choose to sell your tokens / your share of reward, you may well make a profit.
As per section 2. Concept - in the White Paper;-
"..The ownership of these tokens can be transferred to other accounts using transactions on the Ethereum blockchain, as soon as the funding period is over."

There is an excellent decription of how to split (from a technical viewpoint) available at:
https://github.com/slockit/DAO/wiki/How-to-split-the-DAO

Points to Note:

When you sell your Tokens you are also selling the right to rewards.

The Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO)

The Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) is a virtual entity that exists in cyberspace / the internet. It comes into existence when a group of people decide to form a DAO.

Once this initial decision to create is taken the participants may decide to extend participation to a wider community. It is possible that this process could well be entirely anonymous (subject to the technical skills of the participants).

A DAO may be established with a view to raising or investing / managing funds raised, for example to develop a specific idea or a range of ideas or within a particular sector. Participants / investors 'invest' their funds from their own cryptocurrency holdings. This transfer of funds appears on the Blockchain.

Alternatively the purpose of the DAO could well be civic - to remove the inherent weaknesses of outdated political structures.

A typical Block transaction looks something like this;-

Hash: 0x7c27d7ac1cda6308c9e60ddie77cb6372d3fcc79382b1f77dd3a52ecb32987c777964

Miner: sevendwarfs
Gas Limit: 4,700,000
Gas Used: 11,000
Time: 2016-01-01 00:00:00 (0 minutes ago)
Uncle Hash: 0x1ddc7de7dec77d7aab85b777b6ddd41ad3123451b948a7413f0a142fd40d4934
Root: 0xf02dd777a50f73479267671adce3b957876ca561d33ddd765433f038690da9ec8a3a58
Tx Hash: 0xf09ddie837a50d7775671abcde3b7778777dd561d77afd92d3f077790dd9ec7a7a77

Extra: Geth v1.3.6 (Raw: 0xdd7712345678900077665544332211ddie77992354216)
Nonce: 0x7d7d98765432770055374

Each Block has a number, this places the 'Block' in the 'chain' of transactions. It also has the identifier / the keys of the Sender and the Recipient, the amount of the transaction and possibly some data embedded in the transaction. After a brief period of time (often minutes) this transaction is immutable;-

..that means it is unchanging over time or unable to be changed..

Funds flow to the cryptocurrency / Ether account of the DAO, tokens are issued relative to the amount of investment. Once the funds are raised the DAO plan / proposal, as previously agreed, may be to select a primary Contractor who has demonstrated significant / the necessary expertise (or indeed a number of contractors performing a range of tasks). The performance of Contractor(s) would most likely be embedded in a Smart Contract (SC) which would / could / may release funds at regular intervals without further human intervention.

A role within the DAO is that of  'Curator', the Curator would most likely be a group of individuals participating via a multisig wallet/contract, i.e. the wallet requires multiple signatures to release funds. The Curator controls the Whitelist of those contractors authorised to receive Ether from the DAO. The Curator's role is to;-

  • verify that any contract code submitted by a prospective contractor does in fact match the contract as published on the Blockchain (Contract Source Code is published online and publicly verifiable by anyone.)
  • verify that the proposal came from an identified person or organization (via a Blockchain transaction containing information uniquely known only to the Curator and prospective contractor.)

The power of the DAO lies with the Token holders collectively. The Token holders are responsible for proposals they accept, this responsibility extends to;-

  • legal issues
  • the auditing of proposal code
  • the evaluation of proposal merits

What Does a DAO Deliver?

Real Democracy: Deployment of the funds raised are voted upon, there are no cosy deals, bribes, backhanders. The process is open and transparent.
Real Operational Transparency: The DAO votes on proposals put forward by Contractor(s), engagement with Contractors would most likely be via Smart Contract (SC) between the Contractor and the DAO. The operating parameters would most likely be timebound, measurable, quantifiable and contractual.
Real Reputation: The Contractor does not come out of nowhere, in the legacy system one would wake up with a new provider and ask - where did they come from?, inevitably they could be a C level person's 'sponsor'.

Real Verification: Within the structure of the DAO the Curator verifies the authenticity of the contract code and the fact that the person / organisation proposing the contract are one and the same.
Real Performance: The Smart Contract will most likely have clauses that are triggered by time, by a numerical / measurable metric. Overall they will be contractual and non-performance will most likely trigger non-payment automatically.
Real Easy Termination: Termination will essentially be automatic, if you cannot perform your stage will cease to exist.
This is very efficient and elegant, the combination of the transparency of the Blockchain, the immutability of the smart contract combine to minimise the need for legal battles or court involvement, or recriminations.

It could be argued that litigation arises from lack of clarity and lack of immutability. Whilst we stand at the dawn of the DAO it may well be that the properly thought out, well structured DAO will ultimately become the vehicle of choice for those joining together for a common purpose.

At a political level or in the political sphere the real issue is that the edifice is built on lies, half truths, sleight of mind. It really is no way to run a planet.

The DAO structure is a most important evolutionary step:-
  • it allows the DAO Token holders to control 100% of funds from day one
  • it is immutable code-wise
  • it removes the layers of intermediaries
  • it negates Government, corporate & community paralysis due to corruption & ineptitude

The DAO Framework

The DAO framework is side project of Slock.it UG and as completely opensource is being made available as a gift to the Ethereum community. Slock.it UG are a Blockchain + IoT solutions company registered in Germany (HRB 30026).

The Curators to The DAO were announced 25/Apr and are comprised of 11 members who are at the pinnacle of the development of the entire Ethereum concept.
